Summary of the event
The network-wide event in Porto represented an important step for the GlyCanDrug consortium. The Project Officer (PO) Caroline Peters attended the meeting to check, support and help us to understand if the workflow of the project was going in the right way. Thanks Caroline! All the beneficiary partners presented a flash talk to introduce their institutions and their role in the project, then it was the stage of the PhD students who did two talks:
- During the first talk, they introduced themselves to the PO and their role in the project including connections with the other PhD students;
- The second talk was more technical. Each students presented his/her results to the DCPC for evaluation of the advancements they did so far. Each talk was followed by an open discussion with all the supervisors and members of the consortium.
A section dedicated to individual meetings of each PhD student with the corresponding DCPC was crucial to discuss about the scientific and training workflow of each student.
A scientific workshop in “Glycobiology in Cancer: basic mechanism and innovation in glycan-based therapy” was instrumental to train students on topics related to glycoscience from bacis concepts to translational perspectives. Then, as in Zaragoza, PhD students had the opportunity to implement their soft skills. This was the stage of David Peralta, Editor-in-Chief of ChemMedChem (Wiley)! He delivered two courses to train students on how to write scientific manuscripts and communicate their results to the scientific community. In the same direction, Júlio Borlido Santos from i3S trained GlyCanDrug students on tools like press release for communication in science.
The round table where PhD students have the opportunity to discuss with experts in selected field is a hallmark of the GlyCanDrug consortium! This is the time of discussing about the topic: Bench-to-beside translation of basic research.
